Chelsea suffered a surprise defeat against Dinamo Zagreb in their first game of the Champions League group stage this season, and sacked former coach Thomas Tuchel soon after.

Nevertheless, they still managed to win two games against their rivals Milan and eventually finished first in Group E. They will now face Dortmund in the round of 16.

Before the knockout stages, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which organizes the Champions League, allowed Chelsea to add up to three new players acquired in the winter transfer market, and after Chelsea’s super-sized squad in January, there was much interest in how they would add their reinforcements.

Then, on February 3, Chelsea posted the list of registered players on its official website. Enso Fernandez, Mihailo Mudric, and Joao Felix, who played for Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Atletico Madrid in this season’s Champions League, respectively, were newly added to the squad.

Meanwhile, Benoit Badiassil, Noni Madueke, Andrei Santos, and David Datolo Fofana were dropped from the roster. In addition, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who started all six Champions League games and scored two goals in the two games against Milan, was also left off the roster.
