Kamila Valieva, a rising star in the figure skating world, has been suspected of doping. On February 11, the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced that trimetazidine, a banned substance, had been detected in a sample taken at the Russian Championships in December last year, putting a hold on her participation.

British journalists were again subjected to a storm of abuse.

The doping scandal seems to have created a heavy atmosphere among journalists from around the world covering the event. The Guardian reports.

The Guardian reports, “When Inside the Games reporters Duncan Mackay and Michael Pavitt first reported the story (on Feb. 9), the Russians exploded in anger. They were flooded with messages saying the report was false.”

The reporter was challenged on social media, “If there’s a substance in the tea, it’s probably poison,” referring to the case of Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian intelligence officer who was poisoned in London in 2006. Fortunately, I don’t drink tea, and I avoid the Millennium Mayfair Hotel (the site of the poisoning),” he replied, adding, “You seem to know what went wrong. Get ready to follow the same path.

After the ITA’s announcement on February 11, a British journalist asked Valieva, “Are you clean? Have you taken your medicine? Did you take your medicine? Although she did not respond, the British journalist who asked the questions was surrounded by Russian media personnel and called the questions “inappropriate for a 15-year-old child.

When the case was published in the Russian media, the British journalist was again subjected to a storm of abuse. Some of the threats included, “Russian journalists will tear you to shreds! Some of them even threatened to do so.

The press was also on edge. Depending on the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on February 14, she will be selected to participate in the individual competition starting on February 15.
