His family announced the death, but did not disclose the cause of death.

He is also considered one of the most effective leaders in the country’s history, as he established a period of solid growth and peace. He was unfazed by the turbulent times and was known as “Steady Eddie,” and was often photographed holding an unlit cigar.

Ramos is also the first Protestant to serve as president of the Philippines, a country with a Catholic majority. He took office over the objections of some in the Catholic Church and actively promoted family planning to control rapid population growth.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, son of the late former President Marcos, who took office in June, said, “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of President Fidel Ramos, who lived a full life as a soldier and public servant and passed away today,” and “What Mr. Ramos left behind as president will be engraved forever in the hearts of the people. What Mr. Ramos left behind as president will forever be etched in the hearts of his people,” he mourned.
