Mr. Xi Jinping will come. President Putin will come.

In an interview with Bloomberg News chief editor John Micklethwait, President Djoko said, “Mr. Xi Jinping is coming. President Putin will also come, he told me,” he said. This is the first time that Indonesia, the chairing country, has confirmed plans for Chinese and Russian leaders to attend the G20 summit.

This is the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders, including U.S. President Biden, since the start of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. Shortly before the invasion began, President Putin and President Xi had said that there were no limits to the friendly relations between the two countries. The G-20 countries are divided over sanctions against Russia.

We asked the Chinese Foreign Ministry for comment, but received no response. A spokesman for the Russian presidential office declined to comment, but another official familiar with the situation confirmed that Mr. Putin planned to attend.

Putin and Djoko held a telephone conversation on August 18 to discuss preparations for the G20 summit. A statement from the Russian presidential office did not mention whether Putin would attend. Ukrainian President Zelensky is also scheduled to attend, and the two leaders may meet for the first time since the Russian invasion.
