Sex scenes have been a problem throughout “Game of Thrones,” but that changed with “House of the Dragon. And it was directed by a woman, Claire Kilner!
Director Claire Kilner’s thoughts on sex scenes
The drama “House of the Dragon” is a spin-off of “Game of Thrones” (“GoT”), and the problems criticized in “GoT” have been relatively improved. In “GoT,” scenes and expressions related to sex and sexual violence have been problematic on numerous occasions, and the treatment of female characters has also been criticized, partly due to the fact that only one of the 19 directors and two of the screenwriters who shot all 73 episodes were women.
However, “House of the Dragon” did feature a female director, Claire Kilner, for the fourth episode of Season 1. The first three, six, and seven episodes are directed by men, but Kilner is also working on episodes five and nine, which sets a good trend for the future. And the fourth episode, which she directed, immediately received rave reviews! This is because there are a lot of various sex scenes in this episode, and they are not only not as bad as in “Game of Thrones,” but they are portrayed correctly.
In a making-of video by HBO, Kilner says, “I’ve seen how male directors shoot sex scenes. That’s why he was able to depict Rhaenyra and Damon kissing, but Damon not having sex with Rhaenyra, and then Rhaenyra being alone and asking Sir Christon to join her, in a realistic way that shows Rhaenyra as a person with feelings.
Damon thought it was shocking for Rhaenyra, but she was not only shocked, she was excited. And when it happened…he had nothing. And he couldn’t come to terms with the lack of control, the lack of initiative. What that says to me is that there are young women who want sex as much as that young man does [laughs].”
Intimacy coordinators protect female actors
On the other hand, it seems that just because the film depicted women enjoying sex did not mean that they were not protected on the set. In this film, an expert Intimacy Coordinator was hired to protect the actors during filming where the actors were naked and during intimate scenes such as sex and kissing scenes. HBO, the production station for “House of the Dragon” and “Got,” has used Intimacy Coordinators for all intimate scenes in all of its films since 2018.
In episode 4, there were several intimate scenes between Alicent and King Viserys, but Emily Carey, who played Alicent, says she was “scared” from the moment she read the script because she knew that the sex scenes in “GoT” were “violent”.
Moreover, Emily was 18 at the time of filming, and Paddy Considine, who played the king, was 30 years older than her. Emily, who had never met him, said in an interview with Newsweek, “I could only imagine it was just me and a 47-year-old man. I was a little apprehensive,” she recalls. But having the Intimacy Coordinator on her side was a big help, and she was able to get through the shoot.

He said, “I had the support of the intimacy coordinator, and I could tell them everything, and they would say, ‘I know this is not your job, and I don’t want to bother you, but I have a favor to ask…’ That we didn’t have to…. We had a really open conversation. She [the Intimacy coordinator] was a big help in rehearsals. And she was a big help on the set. It was easier than I thought it would be.
The Intimacy Coordinator was criticized by many female actors when Sean Bean, who played Eddard Stark in “Game of Thrones,” said that it “ruins the naturalness” of the role. Some have not changed, but the producers of “House of the Dragon” have moved on.
Fans also praised the show.
The fourth episode has received a great deal of applause from fans. One person said, “A sex scene depicted from a woman’s point of view and filmed by a female director makes for a different kind of sex scene! ‘House of the Dragon’ has learned from what ‘Game of Thrones’ got wrong”.
Another viewer said, “I’m not 100% crazy about ‘House of the Dragon,’ but let me just say that the changes created by a female director are amazing. Oh, God. I went from a buying brothel to various sex scenes in the same episode, but it didn’t make me feel the worst”.

Ita O’Brien, a leading Intimacy coordinator, said in an exclusive interview by Front Row that when portraying female sexuality, it needs to be from a woman’s perspective. First and foremost, if you are going to portray female sexual pleasure, it has to be written by a woman. The script has to be written by a woman. If it is written by a man, it will be from a man’s point of view. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a male perspective. But what is not good is when the male point of view is the standard, and when people don’t realize that it is a male point of view.
The House of the Dragon did a great job of that.
