According to Vanity Fair, James Earl Jones has retired as the voice of Darth Vader and has handed over the character’s voice acting rights to Lucasfilm and Respeecher, a provider of voice conversion technology for the entertainment industry.
Respeecher is a Ukrainian company that uses archival recordings and AI programs to create new lines using the voices of voice actors who are no longer in roles or have passed away.
Recently, the method was used to recreate the voice of a young Luke Skywalker in the live-action “Star Wars” drama “Boba Fett” and to mimic Darth Vader’s voice in “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
James’ retirement was influenced by the conflict in Ukraine. Matthew Wood, sound editor for Lucasfilm, who has worked with James for much of his “Star Wars” tenure, indicated that “Respeecher” was a possibility and agreed to give up his voice rights so James could keep Vader alive.
