The entire outline was rewritten.

Stranger Things has been one of the streamer’s most popular shows since it was first released on Netflix in 2016. Set in the 1980s in the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins, the story follows Eleven (Elle), a psychic, and her friends and family as they confront unexplained phenomena.

Season 4, released earlier this year, featured Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower, who Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) had to confront. Fans and critics alike praised Season 4 for its significant improvement over the previous season and its standout effects scenes, but criticized it for its large cast of characters.

As part of a recent speaking event at WGFestival 2022, the Duffer brothers revealed that the delay in Season 4 production due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection allowed them to fully outline the storyline for Season 5. However, after Season 4 was released, the creators received feedback from fans and fellow collaborators and rewrote the entire outline, keeping some elements while changing others, including the show’s ending.

Says Matt Duffer, “We went back and reread that document. ‘That’s cool, that’s cool. It’s going to be much, much better. It could be much, much better. Even the ending [is] a little different now. The big idea is the same, but what happens in it is completely different.
