With the number of competing countries set to expand to 48, the number of teams per group has become a major point of contention.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino held a press conference at the Qatar World Cup Main Media Center on December 16, and announced that the group league format for the 2026 World Cup in North and Central America would be reconsidered. With the number of competing countries set to expand to 48, the number of teams per group was a major point of contention.

At the press conference, President Infantino stated, “I must say that the four-team group leagues have been successful in this World Cup,” but he also made it clear that the tournament format must be reconsidered and reexamined, whether it is 16 groups of three teams or 12 groups of four teams.

The number of participating countries has expanded to 48 for the North and Central American World Cup in four years, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Under the current proposal, 16 groups of three teams would be formed, and after each team played two matches, the top two teams in each group (32 teams in total) would advance to the final tournament. This format has been criticized by many because of the advantageous or disadvantageous order in which matches are played.

FIFA has decided to reconsider the four-team, 12-team groupings. The number of teams that will advance to the tournament finals was not disclosed.
