On Saturday, January 7, the Kansas City Chiefs traveled to a hostile venue to take on their AFC (American Football Conference) rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders, for the top seed in the AFC (American Football Conference).
If the Bills and Chiefs were to meet in the AFC conference championship, the game would be played on a neutral site.
The Chiefs defeated the Raiders 31-13 in the final week of the regular season to earn the No. 1 seed for the third time in the last five seasons and a first-round bye. Home field advantage will be determined by the outcome of another game.
As a result of the cancellation of the same game in Week 17 of the season following Bills safety (S) Damar Hamlin’s heart failure in the January 2 game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, the Chiefs had a chance to get the top seed in the final round.
However, the Chiefs finished the regular season with a 14-3 record, while the Bills, who are in second place in the AFC, are 13-3 before the final game, and a win against the New England Patriots on Sunday would put the Bills ahead of them in the win column.
Under a resolution agreed to at a special league meeting of NFL clubs on January 6, if the Bills defeat the Patriots on Sunday and the Bills and Chiefs meet in the AFC conference championship, the game will be played on a neutral site. If the Bills lose in Week 18 of the season, the same card could still be played in the conference championship, but in this case it would be held at the Chiefs’ home.
This is the third time the Chiefs, under the direction of head coach Andy Reid and with quarterback (QB) Patrick Mahomes at the helm, have earned the No. 1 seed. They previously achieved the feat in both 2018 and 2020.
The Chiefs, who clinched the AFC West title for the seventh consecutive season, will play the lowest-seeded team in the AFC, the winner of the Super Wild Card, in the Divisional Round scheduled for Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22 locally.
