Alain Permain, sporting director of the Alpine F1 Team, explained that Renault’s new power unit is “much more complex” than before. So far, feedback has been positive, he said.
We haven’t had to actually talk about the new power unit at all,” he said. That in itself is positive,” Alain Permain told reporters.
Like other F1 engine manufacturers, Alain Permain said the three-day F1 Barcelona test was positive in itself, with no complaints from drivers about reliability, even though the F1 engines were not running at full capacity.
Alpine F1 stopped in the morning on the final day with white smoke coming from the back of the car, but Fernando Alonso marked 127 laps on the first day. Despite the significant changes made to Renault’s F1 power unit this year, the car was smoother than the previous year’s model.
‘This engine is completely different from the one we had previously obtained from Viry.
This engine is far more complex and tighter looking.” We put the new power unit in the car and it ran right away with no problems. Of course, that’s great.”
We’ve only heard the usual comments from drivers about drivability and a little turbo lag. But after making some adjustments to the mapping, that too has been resolved.”
I must add that I have yet to drive a lap at full power. We haven’t used the engine settings for qualifying and the race yet, but we are getting pretty close.”
On the final day, the Alpine F1 team’s session was terminated midway through due to hydraulic problems, but the team collected 266 laps of data. Alain Permain said that the new power unit was running “fine” at the time, leaving the impression that the team had the right base for the season.
Alpine F1 is the only team using Renault’s F1 power unit this season. This means that it has the weakness of not being able to compare much in terms of complete power with its rivals Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull powertrains, with other power unit suppliers providing engines to several teams.
