The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on July 11 that a secret project called “Project 42” was underway at electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla, with plans to build a glass mansion near its headquarters in suburban Austin.
This building is CEO Elon Musk’s private residence.
As a result of such internal explanations, and after intense scrutiny from Tesla’s lawyers and board members, an internal investigation was reportedly conducted to determine whether the purchase of millions of dollars worth of specialty glass constituted an improper expenditure of expenses.
According to the WSJ, a final rendering of the project depicted a glass box similar to the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, which appeared to have living areas including multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Another rendering depicted a waterfall built around the building and a futuristic pickup truck similar to Tesla’s Cybertruck, according to the source. The reported mansion is a Tesla property.
The reported mansion is a far cry from Musk’s self-proclaimed taste for modest homes. He had previously said that a $50,000 home he rented from SpaceX in south Texas was his primary residence.
Musk tweeted that his residence is “a house in Boca Chica, Texas that doesn’t cost $50,000” and that the only house he owns is one used for events in the Bay Area. However, contrary to his claims, the WSJ reported that Musk lives in a mansion owned by PayPal co-founder Ken Howery.
Musk sold the California residence for $130 million after declaring in 2020 that he would not own a home. With estimated holdings of $242.8 billion ($34 trillion), Musk is currently considered the richest person in the world.
