The strike by the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA) has been ongoing since July 14. About 160,000 Hollywood actors and others are members of the Screen Actors Guild of America. They have been negotiating for over a month with the Motion Picture and Television Producers Association of America, which represents production studios, demanding higher wages, better working conditions, and AI regulations in the industry.

However, on July 14, after negotiations broke down, they went on strike, suspending their film and television appearances. Actors will not be able to participate in the production, performance, or promotion of their films.

Even before the strike began, many actors had voiced their concerns about low wages in the industry. Sydney Sweeney, 25, is one of them.

Sweeney, 25, is an Emmy-nominated actor who has appeared in popular dramas such as EUPHORIA and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Despite being a popular actor who has appeared in numerous hit movies, Sydney has previously confessed that he cannot pay his bills with his acting career alone.

In July 2022, Sydney told The Hollywood Reporter about her dream of becoming a young mother.

I’ve always wanted to have a family and be a young mother.”

But if I don’t work, I won’t have the money and I won’t be able to provide for my children. (Even if I wanted to take six months off (for maternity/paternity leave), I wouldn’t have enough income to cover my living expenses while I’m not working.”

Sydney also commented on the decreasing amount of money being paid for reruns.

We don’t get paid as much anymore as we used to. Star actors who have already proven themselves still get paid, but I have to give about 5% to my lawyer, 10% to my agent, and 3% to my business manager.

In addition, I have to pay my publicist every month. That’s more than my mortgage.”

The value of Sydney’s house has been determined to be approximately $3 million.

In the past, actors received a “regidual fee” on the proceeds of their films when they were shown on TV or released on DVD.

The current strike also involves negotiations over secondary royalty fees for major video distribution services, which are growing rapidly.

Although each video distribution service company pays a certain amount of royalties to actors, they do not disclose data such as viewer ratings and refuse to distribute secondary royalties according to the earnings from their works.

With streaming on distribution services becoming more mainstream than DVDs and television, the decline in secondary royalties, once an important source of income for actors, has become a problem.

Sydney also said of his contract with the brand.

If all I did was act, I wouldn’t be able to live in Los Angeles.

Signing a contract with a brand is a job you have to do (to make a living).”

Now, a strike by the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA) has brought the low secondary royalties back into the spotlight. Some actors have disclosed the amount they actually received.

Mandy Moore, who appears in the drama This Is Us, confessed that she once received only 81 cents (about $115) in secondary royalties.

Kimiko Glenn, who appears in the drama Orange Is the New Black, revealed that she received about $27 (about $3,830) from Netflix as a secondary royalty overseas.

Glen Powell, who co-stars with Sydney in the film Anyone But You, also stated the following.

For years, I’ve managed to eke out a second-rate paycheck in an effort to make it as an actor.

The industry continues to evolve. I believe actors’ livelihoods should be protected at every step of the way.”
