The movie “Barbie” is a worldwide hit. Margot Robbie, who stars in and produces the movie, will receive a very large sum of money for its success. The amount is a whopping $50 million (about 7.27 billion yen). The online edition of “Variety” magazine reports the news.
According to the online version of Variety magazine, Margot’s basic fee is $12.5 million (about ¥1.81 billion).
In addition to that, a remuneration based on box office revenue, called a box office bonus, is added, bringing the total to $50 million.
Incidentally, there is of course no disparity between male and female actors, and Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, is paid the same amount of $12.5 million. Director Greta Gerwig will also receive a box office bonus.
It has been about a month since the film was released in the U.S., and it has grossed $526.3 million at the U.S. box office and $657.6 million (¥957.2 million) at the international box office. Worldwide, it is expected to increase still further to approximately $1.18 billion (approximately 171.77 billion yen). In terms of domestic box office, “Frozen II,” which was co-directed by Jennifer Lee, has overtaken “Frozen II” as the top film directed by a female director. The live-action film also surpassed “Captain Marvel,” directed by Anna Boden with Ryan Fleck, at the worldwide box office.
Margot also proved her skills as a producer with this film. She personally handpicked director Gerwig and hired her and partner Noah Baumbach as screenwriters. In a meeting with executives at the film company, Margot presented the idea that “in order for a film company to thrive, it needs a visionary director and the courage to combine big ideas,” citing the 1993 film “Jurassic Park” as an example, and explaining that “the movie is a story of a man and a woman who have a lot in common. He explained that the combination of Steven Spielberg and dinosaurs, which may seem absurd, created a historical masterpiece, and appealed that the combination of Gerwig and Barbie is comparable to that. We look forward to seeing what kind of hit movie he will create next.
