Three dresses worn by Princess Diana recently sold for a total of 1.3 million pounds (about 240 million yen).

The red silk dress by Bruce Oldfield that Princess Diana wore to the screening of “Hot Shots” at Leicester Square in London in November 1991 sold for 458,434 pounds (about 84 million yen), about three times the expected price of 160,000 pounds (about 29 million yen). The dress sold for 458,434 pounds (about 84 million yen).

A black and jade dress by Catherine Walker, Princess Diana’s personal designer for 16 years, sold for 458,484 pounds. In addition, a black velvet and ivory dress by Bruce Oldfield, which Princess Diana wore as part of her personal collection, jumped from an expected bid price of 48,000 pounds (about 880,000 yen) to 407,540 pounds (about 75 million yen).

Martin Nolan, the executive director of the auction, expressed his surprise at the dress, which defied all expectations.

The dress had been out of the public domain for more than 30 years, and was sold at an auction in New York by Ellen Peso (who passed away in January this year at the age of 82), an American businesswoman, two months before Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in August 1997. At the time, 79 of Princess Diana’s dresses were offered at a charity auction for the AIDS Crisis Trust and the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer Fund, and Peso used 120,000 pounds (approximately 22 million yen) that she had saved to buy a house to bid on five of them.
