Miles Teller, who plays Rooster in the film “Top Gun: Maverick,” had an unfortunate period of time when he did not get roles because of his facial scars.
Miles Teller’s facial scarring was caused by a car accident.
Miles Teller, who plays Rooster, the son of the late Goose, in the movie “Top Gun Maverick” starring Tom Cruise, is now a successful actor who has appeared in a series of high-profile films, but he had a long road to success, and there was a time when he was unhappy because of his facial scars.
Although barely noticeable now, Miles has multiple scars on his left cheek and neck. The scars were caused by a car accident in 2007, when Miles was still a college student.
The car was driven by Miles’ college friend, with Miles sitting in the passenger seat. The car his friend was driving was going 80 mph when he lost control of the car. “The car we were in rolled over eight times. I was thrown out the window. I was lying about 50 feet away from the car, unconscious and covered in blood. My friends thought I was dead,” he recalled in an interview with ABC.
Fortunately, he survived, but 15 years later, Miles’ face still bears the scars of the accident, and he still has two pebbles lodged in his cheek. Doctors chose not to remove the pebbles out of concern for more scarring. He also underwent laser treatment over three years after the accident to try to make the scars less noticeable. In an interview with Esquire, Miles described the experience as “very painful.
Incidentally, when the scars were more visible, he said that he failed several auditions because of them, and was once told, “Miles, you are a good actor, but it is unnatural for this character (in the setting) to have scars. It was then that he met John Cameron Mitchell, director of “Rabbit Hole” (2010). Mitchell not only told him that he “liked” Miles’ scars, but also cast Miles as Jason in the film. The film brought Miles to the actor’s attention, and he has since had many more roles, including “Top Gun Maverick.”
