Shonka Dukureh, a blues singer who appeared in the movie “Elvis” currently in theaters, has died at the age of 44.

According to DEADLINE, Shonka was found dead in his bed in his apartment in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 21. It was Shonka’s two children who found her, and the children went to a neighbor’s house for help. Police received the call at 9:27 AM local time.
The coroner is currently working to determine the cause of death, but no crime is suspected.
Shonka played Big Mama Thornton in Elvis. Thornton was the first person to record the classic song “Hound Dog,” which Presley would later cover. Her appearance in the film was Shonka’s acting debut.
She is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and holds a bachelor’s degree in theater from Fisk University and a master’s degree in education from Trevecca Nazarene University.
She was also just beginning her acting career, and the film “Elvis” was her screen debut. No plans for a memorial service or other events have been announced.
