JoJo Siwa explains the truth behind her inflammatory comment.

JoJo Siwa, a charismatic teen who is active as a singer, actor, and YouTube star, recently came under fire for saying in an interview with Yahoo Life that she does not like the word “lesbian,” which means female homosexual.

Last January, JoJo came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community by posting a photo on social media of herself wearing a T-shirt with the words “best. gay. cousin. ever” on it.

In the interview in question, JoJo stated that she is also a lesbian and said, “I don’t like the word (=lesbian) per se, it feels TOO much. Well, actually I am a lesbian, but the word [lesbian] is so moist, it makes me go oops,” she jokingly commented. However, JoJo was criticized by some people who heard this comment, who said that she called lesbian a “dirty word” and insulted lesbians.

When JoJo later learned of the criticism she was receiving, she uploaded a video to TikTok, in which she said, “I wanted to make this clear, after looking back at what I said. I never said lesbian is a dirty word, and I would never call it a dirty word. (It’s not a bad word. It is not a slur. I am not ashamed to say it [lesbian], nor am I ashamed to be one,” she explained.

She continued, “One of the comments on my statement was, ‘It’s a shame that some people are trying to cancel you (JoJo) out for saying you don’t like the sound of the word,’ and that’s exactly what happened. I do not dislike the word lesbian. But when someone asks me about my sexuality, I say gay (not lesbian). (It’s just that it’s not a word that flows for me.
