Negotiations continue between Formula One and the Automobile Club de Monaco to extend the contract for the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, but at this point it is not clear whether the event will be held beyond 2023. In an effort to make the negotiations work, Prince Albert II of Monaco has begun to get involved, as revealed by 2016 F1 champion and Monaco resident Nico Rosberg.
Monaco has always held a special place in F1’s history.
In 2023, F1 plans to have a 24-race calendar, but the traditional grands prix of Belgium, France, and Monaco could be left out of the frame.
Monaco has occupied a special place in F1’s history. As a result, it has some privileges, such as paying a lower fee to F1 than other grands prix and enjoying more favorable conditions regarding trackside advertising.
However, F1 now wants to sign a contract with Monaco on more favorable terms for itself. On the other hand, the Automobile Club de Monaco is not willing to make any concessions, Rosberg said.
The Prince of Monaco himself has intervened in the negotiations. The Monaco Automobile Club is taking a hard line,” Rosberg told Motorsport-Total.com.
We need an intermediary to bring together the views of F1 and the car clubs. The Duke of Monaco is deeply involved. Monaco should stay on the calendar. Monaco should stay on the calendar and I hope it does.
Monaco is an absolute necessity for F1, but Rosberg says Monaco also needs to accept the current state of F1 and come to terms with it.
Monaco is the history of the race itself, the most spectacular event of the year. It needs to continue. But Monaco also needs to compromise a little bit, because there are sponsors at the circuit that are competing with the sponsors of the F1 World Championship. That, of course, is tough. Somehow we need to find a compromise.”
