Are you looking forward to Apple’s upcoming event to unveil the new “iPhone”? It seems certain that more Americans than ever are excited as well. According to one survey, the “iPhone” actually accounts for the majority of smartphones in use in the United States.
Strong trend of Android users migrating to “iOS” devices (iPhones)
According to research firm NPD Group, the iPhone was surpassed by Android in sales in the U.S. in 2010, but according to Counterpoint Research, that may be changing. As The Financial Times (FT) reported earlier, there has been a strong trend of Android users migrating to “iOS” devices (iPhones) in the US over the past four years.
Globally, the share of Android devices has fallen from a peak of over 77% reached in 2018 to just under 70%, according to StockApps’ analysis. In contrast, iPhones have increased from less than 20% four years ago to account for more than 25% of all smartphones worldwide. While this trend is not as dramatic as the change in the U.S., it is likely to reflect Apple’s sales growth in regions such as China.
For perspective, it also illustrates how few brands consumers have to choose from in today’s smartphone market: Counterpoint Research reports that nearly 70% of smartphones sold in the second quarter of 2022 were from Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi. Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo. Four of them use Android.
