Apple releases a new iPhone model every year, and in 2022, the “iPhone 14” series has just been announced. We are sure that there are people who are replacing their iPhones and people who are planning to buy new iPhones, but which model of iPhone are you using right now?

On September 8-9, the All About editorial department conducted a survey of 500 people across Japan regarding the iPhone. The following are the characteristics of the most popular iPhone models, along with comments from the respondents.

◆No. 3: “iPhone 8” (45 respondents)

The iPhone 8 is one of the most popular iPhone models over the years, even though it has been on the market for five years since 2017. iPhone has undergone a major redesign since the iPhone X series, eliminating the Home button. The iPhone 8 is the completion of the traditional iPhone series with a home button, and it is a well-rounded model. Although the design was later carried over to the “iPhone SE” series, the “A11 Bionic” processor is still a highly practical model with sufficient functionality for daily use.

Many respondents supported the fingerprint recognition, while others said the size is just right, with a physical home button” (a woman in her 30s in Kanagawa Prefecture) and “one-handed operation, small enough to fit in a pocket” (a woman in her 20s in Ishikawa Prefecture).

No. 2: “iPhone 12” (54 respondents)

The “iPhone 12” was released in 2020. It is still sold in 2022 when the iPhone 14 series goes on sale, and although it does not have the functionality of the latest model, it is popular as a highly cost-effective model. Another appeal of this model is that it is priced at less than 100,000 yen, starting at 92,800 yen for 64GB at the Apple Store. The design has been changed to a flat model with an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display, and it supports 5G communications, making it an easy model to use over the long term.

Many respondents who chose “iPhone 12” commented on its “good camera quality” and “5G compatibility.” Regarding the camera, a woman in her 20s in Gifu Prefecture seemed particularly attracted by its “ability to take more beautiful portrait photos.

No. 1: “iPhone SE (2nd generation)” (95 respondents)

The “iPhone SE (2nd generation)” will be released in 2020. It has the same design as the popular “iPhone 8” but is equipped with the same “A13 Bionic chip” as the “iPhone 11” series. The compact size of the 4.7-inch display and 148g weight makes it easy to use, and it also offers water resistance, fingerprint recognition, wireless charging, and other features. As long as LTE speeds are sufficient, this is a model that can be used for a long time.

As with the iPhone 8, the respondents also appreciated the “fingerprint authentication” and “home button,” as well as the “palm-sized and easy to hold” (Kanagawa Prefecture, 40s female) and “fits in your hand” (Kagoshima Prefecture, 30s female), and the “high performance for a low price” (Mie Prefecture, 30s male). (Mie Prefecture, 30s, male) and “high performance for a low price” (Mie Prefecture, 30s, male).

Experts look at the results this way!

As for the ranking of iPhones currently in use, it is understandable that many respondents use “iPhone 8,” “iPhone 12,” and “iPhone SE (2nd generation),” which have many key factors among successive generations of iPhones. It is likely that they have continued to use these models since then because they were suitable as the first choice to replace them in that era.

The author has been a fan of smaller iPhones and has used the “iPhone SE,” “iPhone 12 mini,” and “iPhone 13 mini. Perhaps because I live a life in which I use multiple mobile devices at the same time, I feel that the small iPhone is better balanced in the presence of a notebook PC or tablet.

Since there was no “mini” model in the “iPhone 14” series, I wondered whether I should continue to use the “iPhone 13 mini” or replace it with the “iPhone SE (3rd generation),” but I decided to try the “iPhone 14 Plus,” the first large-screen model introduced in the standard model this time. I am thinking of trying out the “iPhone 14 Plus”, the first large screen model introduced in the standard model this time.
