However, BTS was recognized by the government for its contribution to the nation through its global popularity, and the law was amended in 2020. The law was changed to read, “Those who receive a recommendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism are exempted from military service obligation until the age of 30.

 

According to this law, JIN, the oldest member of the group, will have to enlist by the end of this year.

 

The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a statement. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to make an official decision on BTS’s military service by December of this year.

 

Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Park Bo Kyun responded to the BTS issue at a national audit related to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held at the National Assembly on Wednesday, October 5.

 

When asked by Lee Yong-ho, a member of the “People’s Power” party, about the issue of BTS’s military service, Park Bo Kyun said, “The issue of JIN’s military service will expire in December, and we plan to finalize the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s position at an early stage before that,” adding, “We will examine this issue from various angles in a comprehensive manner. We will examine the issue comprehensively from various angles. National defense is a sacred duty, military service is a symbol of fairness, and BTS has made significant cultural and economic contributions as the face of Korea, the issue of fairness with entertainment workers including BTS, the impact of one of the seven members enlisting on the group’s activities, the awareness of men in their 20s and public opinion, etc. The decision will be made from a variety of perspectives,” he added.
