Producers reveal the truth… and why they couldn’t go that far back then.
The hugely popular children’s drama Wizards of Waverly Place (2007-2012), starring Selena Gomez (Alex), could have had another storyline.
On Monday 27 March, Peter Murrieta, executive producer and head writer for the first three series of the show, appeared on the podcast programme Wizards of Waverly Pod. He responded to a request to tell us what stories he wanted to explore further in the work.
In four episodes, Peter Murrieta touched on the wizard ‘Stevie’, played by Hayley Kiyoko, and stated that he wanted to depict more of the relationship between Stevie and Alex, a relationship that is very common to many people.
‘Wizards Of Waverly Place’ showrunner confirms Selena Gomez’s character was bisexual and they wanted to do more with Alex and Stevie’s relationship:

Murrieta added that she wanted to develop their relationship to a point where they were more than friends, “I couldn’t go that far at the time. But I think we all knew what that relationship was about. If I had been able to portray it, it would have been fine,” he added.
Jennifer Stone, the host of the podcast show, responded to Murrieta’s answer by saying that it could have happened years later. David DeLuise, also a presenter, agreed that “that could happen” on a modern-day Disney Channel.
Murrieta also confessed about her own ending concept. She revealed that she wanted season four to revolve around the relationship between Alex, played by Selena Gomez, and Mason, played by Greg Sulkin.
‘I was hoping that season four would feature a storyline where Alex and Mason would build a relationship,’ Murrieta said, ‘where they could mend each other’s ways as good for each other.’
