The model for the character “Coco,” the great-grandmother of the main character in the movie “Remember Me,” has died at the age of 109.
She was a model for life.
The woman, Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, passed away on Sunday, October 16 in Santa Fe de la Laguna, her birthplace in the western Mexican state of Michoacan.
According to reports, Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero was known and loved locally as “Mama Coco. Although Disney has not officially acknowledged it, it is believed that she may have been the model for the main character’s great-grandmother “Coco” in the 2017 film “Remember Me.”
Her death was announced by Michoacán Tourism Secretary Roberto Monroy in a tweet on Sunday, October 16. He described Ms. Caballero as a tireless woman and a model for life.

In a tweet, Tourism Secretary Roberto Monroy said, “We are very saddened by the death of Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, aka ‘Mama Coco’. She was a tireless woman and a model for life. She was the inspiration for a character loved around the world,” he continued.
According to a report by TMZ, Disney does not confirm that Caballero was the model for “Coco,” but her family claims that the Pixar production team visited their home and lived with them for a while.
Remember Me” is an animated film set in Mexico about the adventures of an aspiring musician who wanders into the land of the dead on the Day of the Dead. The voice of “Coco” was played by Ana Ofelia Murguía.
