For years, the staff and cast of “Lost,” a survival drama that concluded in 2010, have been criticized for the racist and toxic environment in which it was produced.

In a new book by television critic Maureen Ryan, “Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood,” Damon Lindelof reflects on the accusations from the staff and others, revealing that he failed as a leader of the show. Damon says, “I failed as a leader of the show.

Damon said, “As a manager and supervisor, I was fundamentally immature. My role was to provide a safe and comfortable place in the production process while modeling a climate of creative risk and risk-aware behavior. But I failed in that effort,” he said, admitting that he had no understanding of racism or sexism at the time. “My own behavior and the way I treated the people who worked for me was a byproduct of my wrong thinking at the time. I could have evolved and grown a great deal. But in order for that to happen, the people on ‘Lost’ should not have had to make sacrifices and suffer trauma,” he said with regret.

Damon also emphasized that it was not a race issue, saying that one of the actors of color had accused him of being treated unfairly in the script, “Not just him, but all the actors felt they were not being used enough. Still, after acknowledging that there was too much focus on white characters, he said, “He was absolutely right to point that out. Twenty years later, it is one of my biggest regrets,” he added.
