leading Asian-American actor.

The currency, which will go into circulation on Monday, October 24, was produced as part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women’s Quarters Program, which honors pioneering women.

Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson said at the time of the circulation launch, “The fifth currency in the American Women Quarters Program honors Anna May Wong, a courageous advocate who represented Asian American actors and advocated for them to take on more multifaceted roles.” He added, “This 25-cent coin is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of Anna May Wong’s accomplishments in overcoming life-threatening crises and obstacles.

Anna May was born in 1905. A successful Hollywood actress, she made history by becoming the first Asian-American to play the main character on American television in the 1951 drama “The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong.”

There are five women featured in the Mint’s current program, including Anna May. The other featured women are poet Maya Angelou, astronaut Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of a Native American nation, and author Nina Otero-Warren, whose currency will also be featured in the program.

Next year, 25 cents will also be produced for pilot Bessie Coleman, dancer Edith Kanakaore, former first lady of the United States Eleanor Roosevelt, and ballet dancer Maria Tallchief.

In addition, several years ago, the first female Indian woman, Sacagawea, and civil rights leader Susan B. Anthony’s currency was produced.
