Twitter CEO Elon Musk tweeted on November 25 (U.S. time) that the company will introduce new authentication badges on December 2. Companies will be given gold, government agencies will be given gray, and individuals, “whether celebrities or not,” will be given blue certification badges. Individuals can also add a small logo indicating their affiliation with the organization if their organization approves, he explained in a subsequent tweet.

Changes to the Authentication Badge Structure

Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has made changes to the authentication badge system. First, he tried his hand at Twitter Blue, an $8/month subscription that made it difficult to distinguish between verified and paid accounts, leading to confusion when large numbers of people impersonated celebrities and businesses. business partners, and for “official” accounts of “some celebrities,” adding a gray check mark, which it then quickly removed.

The new three-color badges appear to be aimed at maintaining subscription revenue while reducing impersonation.

Musk also stated that “all authenticated accounts will have to undergo manual verification before the check will be activated. However, it is unclear whether Twitter will do all of that work and whether users will be involved in authenticating their identities; we have reached out to Twitter for comment but have not received a response; Musk said he will release a more detailed explanation this week.

On November 25, Musk tweeted in response to a question about whether he would develop his own smartphone if Apple and Google removed Twitter from their respective app stores, “I certainly hope not, but if I have no other choice, I will develop an alternative smartphone.” .

Musk did not provide further details, but if they were to develop not only a smartphone, but also a competing mobile platform that avoids the use of Apple’s App Store and Google Play, they would have to develop their own hardware and software, which would be very difficult.
