The demonstrations have resulted in the closure of airports in the southern cities of Cusco and Arequipa.

Clashes with authorities and blockades of airports and roads have continued, and the death toll from the clashes has risen to seven. According to local travel agencies, about 20 Japanese tourists were stranded in southern Cusco and other areas.

By December 14, prosecutors applied to the court for a preliminary detention of Castillo for another 18 months.

The authorities detained Castillo on December 7 on the grounds that he had declared the dissolution of parliament in violation of the constitution.

Airports in southern Cusco and Arequipa have been closed due to the demonstrations.
