The Spanish Super Cup semi-finals were held on January 11 at the King Fahad International Stadium in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, between Real Madrid, last season’s La Liga champion, and Valencia, last season’s Copa del Rey runner-up.

The match was 1-1 at the end of 120 minutes. Real Madrid won the penalty shootout 4-3 to advance to the final. The final will be held on March 15, and will be a clash between the winner of last season’s Copa del Rey, Betis, and the winner of last season’s second place in La Liga, Barcelona.
Real Madrid, the previous champion, won a penalty kick in the 38th minute when Karim Benzema ran onto a long pass and was knocked down by defender Eli Cumarte on the right side of the penalty area. In the 39th minute, Benzema took the kicker’s place and slotted the ball into the right side of the goal with his right foot to take the lead.
The Valencia midfielder Toni Lato sent in a sharp left-footed cross from the right side of the box, which was met by Samueu Lino, who kicked it in with his right foot. The second half ended 1-1, and the score remained unchanged in extra time. The game was decided by a penalty shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Real Madrid ‘s second-half kicker Benzema, midfielder Luka Modric, midfielder Toni Kroos, and midfielder Marco Asensio were all successful until the fourth man, while Valencia’s two failed due to a shot outside the box and a stoppage by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
