The three-day weekend box office totaled $45.83 million.

This is the third-highest figure ever for the end of the fourth week of a film’s release. The same as “American Sniper” (2014), which is not included in the comparison since it started its expanded release in its fourth week, but compared to the $50.3 million of “Avatar” (2009), which was in second place, it was only slightly below the $50.3 million of “American Sniper. Incidentally, the competition was against “Top Gun Maverick,” the top-grossing film of 2022.

At the end of its fourth week, the previous “Avatar” film had grossed $430 million and “Top Gun Maverick” had grossed $466 million, while “Avatar: The Way of Water” has surpassed the $500 million mark with a comfortable margin. Considering the longevity characteristic of James Cameron’s films, it is certain to surpass $700 million at the final box office and well beyond that.

Incidentally, the film was No. 16 on the North American box office chart as of the weekend, and is expected to jump up to No. 13 by the end of the next weekend. It is also expected to surpass $1.9 billion worldwide as of Thursday, January 12, surpassing “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021), making it the sixth film in history (and the third Cameron film to do so) to surpass $2 billion in worldwide box office.

Boldly challenging “Avatar: The Way of Water” and starting in second place was “M3GAN,” the first collaboration between James Wan of “The Conjuring” series and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse since the “Insidious” series. The horror film depicts a tragedy caused by an AI doll programmed to become the best friend of a traumatized girl.

The film grossed $30.42 million in its first three days. The production cost of the film was approximately $12 million, and nearly three times that amount has already been collected in North America alone. Furthermore, according to the review aggregation site “Rotten Tomatoes,” the film has received positive reviews from 95% of the critics, making it a huge success both at the box office and in terms of critical acclaim. There are reports that production of a sequel has already begun, and it is expected to become a new popular horror series.
