The film’s first director abruptly left during filming and was succeeded by Levinson. However, the film was subsequently hit by a scandal when a US magazine revealed problems on the set and criticised Levinson.

HBO’s original drama series THE IDOL, starring Lily Rose Depp and singer The Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye), had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 22 May local time.

The film is a six-episode limited series directed by Sam Levinson, creator of the HBO drama series EUPHORIA.

The film depicts the underbelly of the Hollywood music industry, where idol singer ‘Joslyn’, played by Lily, falls prey to a cult leader called Tedros, played by The Weeknd. After the emotional stress of her mother’s death, Josslyn cancels her tour and decides to take her place as one of the top idols in the US. This is when she meets Tedros, who has big ambitions, and develops a complicated relationship with him.

According to the US entertainment media Variety, the first two episodes premiered will feature several nude scenes, revenge porn photos of Lily with bodily fluids on her face, as well as extreme scenes such as masturbating with a block of ice.

After the premiere in Cannes, the audience applauded and cheered loudly, giving the film a standing ovation that lasted for five minutes. Director Levinson, who was in the audience, was said to have been moved to tears.

In March this year, The Rolling Stone magazine reported on how HBO’s upcoming EUPHORIA became a “torture porn”, with several sources, including cast and crew, saying that the film was plagued by last-minute revisions and chaotic work. The report stated that the film was plagued by last-minute revisions and chaotic work.

In April last year, Amy Seimetz, the first director of the show, abruptly dropped out after filming 80 per cent of the six episodes. She was then replaced by director Levinson.

The magazine noted that the drama had previously been critical of the music industry’s misogynistic nature, but that the drama’s perspective had changed since Levinson took over as director. It then reported that one source criticised the film for having “changed into the kind of distorted fantasy that toxic men embrace”.

At a press conference in Cannes on 23 May, Lily responded to these reports by saying, “It’s a little sad and disappointing to see such vile words about someone you really care about and know is not that kind of person.

The Weeknd, who made his acting debut in the film, said, “The goal was to stir the pot with director Levinson and make something special and fun, something that would make people laugh and piss some people off”.
