Tom Cruise requested to be allowed to promote his films during the strike.

Tom Cruise, who was scheduled to make his 25th visit to Japan to coincide with the Japanese release of the latest film in the series “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One,” but his visit was canceled due to a strike by the Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA), has requested that the union allow the actor to promote the film during the strike. The SAG-AFTRA strike had forced Tom Cruise to cancel his visit to Japan, but he had asked the union in advance to allow the actor to promote his film during the strike.

SAG-AFTRA, an actor’s union of 160,000 American actors, announcers, actors, voice actors, and online influencers, began the strike on July 14. During the strike, filming of movies and dramas, as well as promotional activities for the purpose of publicizing the works, are prohibited, and as a result of the strike, Tom and other actors of “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One” scheduled to visit Japan on July 17 were canceled at the last minute. The SAG-AFTRA will be the first to host a “Mission: Impossible: Part One” event.

SAG-AFTRA, in its new contract with the Association of Motion Picture Producers of America (AMPTP), of which Paramount, Disney, Warner Bros. and others are members, is seeking several things, including an increase in minimum wage rates, increased contributions to benefit plans, and protection from revenue losses due to inflation, among others. The most focused are the increase in rerun fees and the regulation of AI.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom, who represented SAG-AFTRA at a negotiating meeting with AMPTP in June, urged AMPTP to recognize the seriousness of SAG-AFTRA’s demands regarding regulations on AI, as well as the need to increase the number of stunt coordinators and He also encouraged the AMPTP to support SAG-AFTRA’s position on stunt coordinators and stunt performers. The specifics of SAG-AFTRA’s proposal on behalf of stunt coordinators and stunt performers were not disclosed.

Tom also said that in light of the deteriorating business conditions of movie theaters after the pandemic and the impact that promotional activities have on the box office performance of films, he urged SAG-AFTRA to support the proposal to allow actors to promote their films during the strike, while at the same time explaining that promotional activities by actors are extremely important to movie theaters and, by extension, the profession of actors. The Hollywood Reporter reports that SAG-AFTRA has asked SAG-AFTRA to consider allowing actors to promote their films during the strike. However, as we can see from the current situation, Tom’s request was not granted.
