In his memoir “Spare,” Prince Harry of the British Royal Family says that his brother, Prince William, and his wife, Princess Catherine, are “responsible” for the firestorm that erupted when he dressed up as a Nazi German at a costume party in 2005.
In his younger days, Prince Harry was a much more mischievous young man than he is today, often causing a stir with his indiscretions, and once reportedly being sent to rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. At the time, as soon as the media reported pictures of Prince Harry wearing a Nazi uniform, he was subjected to harsh criticism both at home and abroad. Speaking about it in the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, he said, “It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I felt so embarrassed afterwards,” Prince Harry said in words of remorse, but in “Spare,” he claims that Prince William and Princess Catherine are partly to blame.
According to Prince Harry, when he was unsure whether to wear a pilot or a Nazi uniform to a costume party, he called Prince William and Princess Catherine and asked their opinion, and they both answered “Nazi uniform,” and when he went home and showed them his appearance in the costume, they said, “William’s leotard (*Prince William went to the same costume party dressed as a lion), but worse! Even more ridiculous!” They laughed and said, “That’s even more ridiculous!
Incidentally, Prince Harry revealed in “Harry & Meghan” that he spoke with Jewish leaders and Holocaust survivors after the riot in order to learn from his mistakes.
