Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández reflected on his side’s Copa del Rey quarterfinal win over Real Sociedad on January 25.
The matchup between Barcelona, the La Liga leader, and Real Sociedad, the third-place team in the Copa del Rey, was a match for a spot in the last four of the Copa del Rey.
In the 38th minute, Bryce Mendes left the field with a red for stepping on Sergio Busquets’ foot. With a numerical advantage, Barcelona took the lead in the 52nd minute when Ousmane Dembele slipped in Jules Cunde’s through ball, instantly leaving his defender stranded with a powerful shot. The score remained unchanged and the game ended 1-0. Barcelona advanced to the semifinals.
Reflecting on the match, Xavi said, “There were many positives and the 60 minutes were good, but after the goal we relaxed. We must be more aggressive with the second and third goals. We lacked ambition,” he said of the team’s performance after the first goal.
Xavi was disappointed with his team’s performance after the first goal, saying, “He is an excellent professional. He is an excellent professional, and not only today. He has matured a lot and I trust him a lot. I am helping him to make the best choices and he has great confidence and qualities. In today’s match, everything went well for him,” he complimented.
