On February 8, Manchester U and Leeds played each other in the postponed game of the 8th round of the Premier League.
Manchester U is currently on a four-match winning streak.
They reached the fifth round of the FA Cup, reached the final of the Carabao Cup (EFL League Cup), and beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the 22nd round of the last round of the Premier League. It was their first whitewash in three matches when limited to the Premier League.
This week in midweek, they play Leeds in the postponed section 8. Manchester U made three changes to their starting lineup from the Crystal Palace game, with the suspended Casemiro and injured Antony out of the squad. Marcel Sabitzer, who was announced as a loan signing on the last day of the winter transfer window, makes his first start for his new club. Meanwhile, Leeds also saw new winter signing Weston McKechnie make his first start, while Tyler Adams and Patrick Bamford were also in the starting lineup.
The game got off to a quick start in the first minute when Pascal Strijk stole the ball from Bruno Fernandez on the left side of the opposition line and quickly turned it into an attack. Wilfried Gnonto played a one-two with Bamford, cut in, and swung his right foot out with a powerful strike into the bottom left corner of the goal. The home team, Manchester U, gradually took the lead.
The home team gradually increased their shooting chances, and in the 14th minute, Sabitzer picked up a set piece in the penalty area and attempted a volley that went just over the crossbar. The visitors’ first goal came in the 27th minute, when Wout Weghorst collected a loose ball and played a through ball to B. Fernandez. Alejandro Garnacho got out of the way, dodged the onrushing goalkeeper, regrouped, and tried a shot that was cleared by Maximilian Weber, who was covering the goal.
Leeds took a one-goal lead into the second half, and again created the decisive moment in the 48th minute when Robin Koch won the ball back from Garnacho in enemy territory and put the ball diagonally forward to the left. Gnonto received the pass and used the inside run of Crysencio Summerville to turn the ball into the center of the box, where Rafael Varane was able to tap it home. Leeds recorded an extra point to move closer to victory.
Two goals behind, Manchester U responded in the 62nd minute when Facundo Pellistri reacted to Sabitzer’s floated pass. Diogo Dalot, who had just been brought on, received the ball and sent in a right-footed cross ball. Marcus Rashford was waiting in the penalty area. He headed in his third consecutive Premier League goal, and Manchester U pulled one back.
In the 70th minute, Jadon Sancho, who had come on at the same time as Peristoli, did a great job. Luke Shaw won the ball back in enemy territory and played a one-two with Sancho to the left of the penalty area. The ball was blocked, but Sancho was on hand to meet the spill with a right-footed finish. The goal marked the “return” of Sancho, who had been out of action since his last appearance in October of last year due to poor conditions and made his comeback in the semifinals of the Carabao Cup on October 1, 2012.
Manchester U fought back to tie the game, but were unable to score any more goals. The game went to time. Although Manchester U came from two goals behind to earn a draw, their winning streak in official matches came to an end at four. Leeds, meanwhile, missed out on their first whitewash in eight Premier League matches.
The next Premier League match will be held on February 12, and will be a “back-to-back” match between the two teams. Manchester U will take on Leeds.
