Ed Sheeran confesses past struggles with body image.

Popular singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, known for hits such as ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Perfect’ and who has won four Grammy Awards, opened up about his struggles with binge drinking and negative body image in an interview with Rolling Stone. He opened up about his struggles with binge drinking and negative body image.

Ed prefaced the interview by saying, “It’s awkward to talk about these things, but a lot of people have the same problems as me and hide them at the same time.” I binge eat. I eat without any regard. But now I’m into exercise, fatherhood and work [instead of eating]”, and “I’m very self-conscious and yet I’m in an industry where I’m compared to other pop stars. Riding the wave of the One Direction boom, I was like, ‘Why don’t I have cracked abs?’ ‘ I thought, ‘Is it because I love kebabs and drink beer?’

Ed, who is friends with fellow singers Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes, said he sometimes felt depressed comparing his body shape rather than his singing.

‘I worked with Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes. They are all in great shape. Compared to them, I thought, ‘Why am I so fat?’ ‘ I thought.”

Incidentally, Ed also said on his past podcast Behind the Medal, “I’m about the same age as One Direction and Justin Bieber, and they were all in great shape, and they all had the type of abs that were ripped. So I was like, ‘Do I have to look like them?’ ‘ There was a time when I was worried about it,” he said, as he did this time. He revealed on this programme that he had been so depressed about his body shape complex that he had to forgo several appearances in music videos for his own songs, but that he had become completely health-conscious after quitting smoking.
