The actor who plays Eric explains the “fascinating changes”.
Actor Jonah Hauer-King explains one change that would improve the romance between Ariel and Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid.
Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid was a live-action version of Disney’s 1989 animated feature of the same name. In the film, Halle Bailey plays Ariel, a mermaid who longs for human life and eventually falls in love with Eric, a human.
In a recent interview with Collider, Jonah Hauer-King offers insight into certain changes in The Little Mermaid that deepen the bond between Ariel and Eric. He reveals that it is important that the remake builds Ariel and Eric’s romance on a foundation of friendship.
He explained this when asked about his favourite new element in the film. “[It’s] the friendship. Disney romances have always had an instinctive appeal. We all want to see that. But I think what was interesting about this film was that we saw Ariel and Eric as two people who were a bit restless and congenial, behind the four walls of their respective castles, looking outwards rather than inwards. This meant that their relationship felt like it was really working. ”They were both kind of teaching each other, they were both excited and fascinated by each other’s worlds. That was really lovely. ‘The film is a really good message about what it means to be in love and ultimately it comes down to friendship. That’s the fundamental thing. That’s why it lasts and that’s why it’s so special. So it was really fun to explore that and it was easy for Halle to go on a rampage. We did well.”
