‘I’m in recovery and there’s a lot going on’
Popular Australian singer Sia has revealed that she has been diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder.
During a recent appearance on the Rob Has A Podcast, Sia said, “I have autistic spectrum disorder, I’m in recovery, I’m a lot of things” and revealed that she is sober. This developmental disorder, which the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states ‘can be detected at 18 months of age or younger’, but Sia did not reveal when she was diagnosed. ‘For 45 years I thought, ‘I have to go and put on the human suit’. And in the last two years, I have become, completely, myself”.
Sia was criticised over the casting of Music, the autistic protagonist in her first film as director, Music.
Trailer for Music
Music was released in the US in February 2021 and is based on Sia’s real-life experiences. It is the story of a woman with alcoholism who learns to love and overcome difficulties from her friends and family while living with her autistic sister.
Sia cast able-bodied actress Maddie Ziegler in the role of Music. However, some groups criticised the portrayal of an autistic character by an able-bodied person and the way she was portrayed, saying that it constituted discrimination against people with disabilities.
Two years after this criticism, Sia revealed that she has autistic spectrum disorder. At the time of the criticism, she tweeted that her ‘heart is always in the right place’ and urged critics to ‘watch my films before judging them’.
