Halle Bailey, 23, plays Ariel in the live-action version of “The Little Mermaid. She shows off her beautiful dreadlocks in the film.
Halle says that it cost her a lot to get her hair to look like Ariel’s.
Camille Friend, the hairstylist who did Halle’s hair, told Variety about the process, why the haircut alone cost about $150,000, and why it took more than 14 hours to complete the look.
In a recent cover interview with Ebony magazine, Halle said, “It was incredibly important for me to be in the movie with this hairstyle, which is my original hairstyle,” and “I’ve had dreadlocks since I was five years old. I’ve had dreadlocks since I was five years old. It’s a very important part of who I am,” she said, expressing her strong feelings about Ariel’s “hairstyle.
Camille herself had decided to keep Halle’s original hairstyle, but she also thought it was impossible to use a “wig. Halle’s dreadlocks reached his waist and were more than 60 cm long. Also, wearing a wig over his dreadlocks would look unnatural, so Camille was forced to come up with an alternative plan.
The alternative that was adopted was to wrap red hair (extensions) around Halle’s dreadlocks.

Wrapping the hair around her locks would mean that she would not have to cut or dye her locks. We can change the color without changing the internal structure of her hair. Because the internal structure of her hair and her hair is her own.”
Camille also attributed the cost of Ariel’s hairdo, which cost about $150,000, to the need to remove and redo her curly hair. She also said that adjustments had to be made to make sure the hairstyle worked well for both the underwater and land shoots.
After much trial and error, Camille and her team were able to create a new Ariel image that utilizes Halle’s roots. If you are planning to go see the movie, you may want to pay attention to Halle’s hairstyle as well as the story.
