On June 7, Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad announced that former French international Karim Benzema, who will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, will join the club next season. His contract will be for three years until 2026.

Benzema, who joined the world-famous Real Madrid from Lyon in 2009 at the age of 21, has played 648 official matches over 14 seasons, scoring 354 goals, second only to Cristiano Ronaldo, and has won five Champions League titles and four La Liga titles. He has also contributed to the winning of numerous trophies, including five Champions League titles and four La Liga championships.

Al Ittihad, which wears yellow and black stripes as its home uniform, said on the club’s official Twitter page, “Benzema is here. A new tiger roars. Welcome to Al Ittihad,” along with a video of Benzema holding a uniform with the number “2026” on the back, after signing a contract with him. At the end of the video, Benzema commented, “I am excited to see you in Jeddah (Al Ittihad’s home town).

According to reports in the Spanish media, he will get around 300 million euros (about 45 billion yen) for three years in Saudi Arabia, although the total amount has not been confirmed. Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano, a journalist familiar with the transfer market, claims that the deal is for two years with an option for a one-year extension, and that the total annual salary will be around 200 million euros (about 30 billion yen).
