Novak Djokovic (Serbia) was crowned French Open champion.

In the men’s singles semifinals, No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic (Serbia) defeated No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. The win was the 23rd of his career, the most of any player in the history of the tournament. Alcaraz suffered a right leg injury midway through the third set.

Djokovic broke through in the fourth game at 2-1 in the first set, and from 30-40, he responded to a drop by Alcaraz with an excellent shot to take the point and pump his right fist in the air. In the seventh game at 4-2, he saved all four break points, including three by his opponent. He saved all four of his opponent’s break points, including three at 4-2 in the seventh game, to take the first set.

In the second set, after the seventh game, he called a trainer to help him with his right wrist. 4-5 in the tenth game, he held off three set points from his opponent to earn the win. In a competitive match, the 12th game at 5-6 was broken, making the set 1-1.

Early in the third set, Alcaraz’s opponent increased his drops and got the flow going with some clever lobs. However, Alcaraz was unable to move after the end of the second game, as he made a gesture as if to hang on to his right leg, and received treatment. The injury to his right leg clearly overshadowed his original ironclad footwork and powerful strokes with his lower body. He took the third set 6-1 and pushed through the fourth set to reach the finals.

In the June 11 final, he will face the winner of the match between No. 4 seed Casper Ruud of Norway and No. 22 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Novak Djokovic (making his seventh French final; opponent Alcaraz hurt his right leg in the middle of the third set): “It was really disappointing. I think he must have wondered whether to retire or to play to the end. (He continued to play until the end.) I commend his fighting spirit. It was a battle that pushed both of us to our physical limits. (After Alcaraz’s injury) I tried to play without thinking about anything else. I hope he comes back. It is a dream to play in the finals. I want to play at the highest level and go for the title.
