‘Aggressive, bullying, cruel’
Prince Harry has testified that he was distressed by rumors of a “different father” theory for many years.
Prince Harry is currently in court against Mirror Group Newspapers, which publishes the Mirror and other newspapers, alleging that they have used wiretapping and other illegal means to gather information.
Appearing in London’s High Court on Tuesday, June 6, Prince Harry claimed that he was terribly distressed by reports that his real father was not then Prince Charles, but James Hewitt, a cavalry officer at the time.
In court, referring to a December 15, 2002 article in The Sunday People, Prince Harry said, “I was 18 years old at the time, and I had lost my mother just six years earlier, and it felt very damaging and very real to me,” he said, “They were offensive, they were tormenting, They were cruel,” he continued.
Prince Harry added, “I always questioned the motives behind the articles. Was the newspaper trying to sow doubt in the minds of the public in the hope that I would be ousted from the royal family?” He adds.
He also pointed out that the writer of the article, Deila Rauswell, “had been engaged in illegal intelligence-gathering techniques for years,” and claimed that Prince Harry had “plotted to steal a hair” in order to pursue the allegations against his half-sibling.
Prince Harry also claimed that Deila Rauswell knew in advance that, given the timeline, it was impossible for James Hewitt to be his father.
Prince Harry stated, “At the time of this article and other articles similar to it, I did not know at the time that my mother met Major Hewitt until after I was born,” adding, “I first learned of this timeline around 2014. But I now understand that it was well known to the press,” he added.
