One year after Johnny Depp won a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard in Virginia, the U.S., Heard finally paid Depp $100 million (about 14 billion yen, calculated at 140 yen per dollar) in settlement.
Seven-year muddled divorce and trial comes to an end.
Depp sued her for $50 million (about 7 billion yen), claiming that Heard’s 2018 newspaper article labeled him as an unprovoked domestic violence perpetrator and caused him to lose his job. In response, Heard filed a countersuit seeking $100 million (about ¥14 billion) in damages, claiming that Depp’s lawyers called her allegations “fabricated” and caused her to lose her job. The jury returned a verdict that largely accepted Depp’s claims, with Heard to pay $10.35 million in damages and Depp to pay $2 million in damages to each other.
Heard’s lawyer later confessed on the news program “Today” that she does not have the ability to pay the $10.35 million (approximately 1.4 billion yen) in compensation.
Last December, Depp agreed to a settlement in which he would receive $100 million (about 14 billion yen) from Heard. The settlement was finally paid this month by Heard’s insurance company. Depp’s people said that the settlement money will be divided into five equal parts and donated to five charitable organizations.
This marks the end of their seven-year muddled divorce and trial.
Depp attended the 76th Cannes Film Festival in France last month with his opening film “Jeanne du Barry. This was Depp’s first live-action film since “MINAMATA” three years ago, after he and Hurd’s messy divorce forced him to stay away from acting. Heard, on the other hand, became the mother of a baby girl through surrogacy in 2021 after her divorce, and has now moved to Spain. She is scheduled to make her first public appearance in quite some time this month at the 69th Taormina Film Festival in Italy, where her film “In the Fire” is scheduled to be screened.
