James had appeared in many films during his 60-year entertainment career, including “El Dorado,” “Brian’s Song/Touch Down in Friendship,” and “Funny Lady.” Born and raised in New York City, he was a star football player at Michigan State University before transferring to Hofstra University, where he began his acting career.
After working in numerous television films, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his emotional performance in the 1971 TV movie “Brian’s Song/Touch Down in Friendship.”
He later became a household name for his portrayal of Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe in 1972.
James told The Post in March 2022, “One of the things that made ‘The Godfather’ so successful, besides a great director and script and great actors, was that everyone really enjoyed making it.
Rob Reiner, who directed James in “Misery,” commented on Thursday that he was “very sorry to hear this news” and that “I loved working with him.” He also wrote that John Cusack “is a wonderful actor,” and added that Jon Lovitz “totally sucks.”
