Robert Buchel, who was super obese and weighed over 380 pounds, died last November 15 after suffering cardiac arrest during the recording of “My 600-lb Life.” He was 41.

Before his death, Robert was so obese that it was painful for him to get out of bed, and he depended on his fiancée, Kathryn Lemanski, for most of his life, from eating to showering. However, he decided to appear in “My 600-lb Life” to seriously tackle weight loss and moved to a hospital in Houston with Kathryn last June.

In Houston, under the supervision of Dr. Younan Nowzaradan, a weight-loss surgeon, she underwent a series of rehabilitative measures, including diet and simple walking exercises, etc. In September, she underwent surgery to remove the right side of her body, which had obesity-related lymphedema caused by fat in the abdominal cavity, and successfully lost about 155 kg, bringing her weight down to His weight had dropped to 227 kg.

After the surgery, however, he became depressed due to the stress he had never experienced before, and Robert became dependent on painkillers. Dr. Nowzaradan, who could not stand the painkillers, ordered Robert to stop taking them, but he rebelled, refusing to get out of bed and even tearing the threads that had been used to suture him during the surgery.

Afterwards, he was moved from his hospital room to a rehabilitation facility, but Robert refused to do any exercise, and eventually stopped walking. As he continued to suffer mentally and physically, Robert suffered a cardiac arrest during a program taping five months after he started losing weight and did not return home.

Kathryn, who had accompanied Robert and cared for him, recalled his sudden death: “After the surgery, Robert looked like he was going to die.

After the surgery, Robert was like a different person. He couldn’t take painkillers and stopped facing himself. Before he died, he said to me, ‘I don’t think I can get through tonight. ‘I don’t think I’m going to get through tonight. I love you. I will always love you…’ I have lost my best friend and my partner for life..”

Robert and Kathryn had been together for 14 years and were set to get married next year at Disney World in Florida. Determined to “get his life back on track,” Robert spoke about obesity on the show.

I have to depend on Kathryn to survive. I can’t do anything for myself. Who would want this kind of life? I know that the weight I have gained has put a lot of strain on my body. Unless I get out of this state, my mental health will suffer. All of my emotional problems are due to my uncontrollable weight. I need to get out of this life somehow.”

Two days after Robert’s death, Kathryn wrote on Facebook.

I know it was really hard for Robert because his life wasn’t going the way he wanted it to. Two months before he died, he was happy that his weight loss was successful, and then this happened…. But I don’t want his death to be in vain. I think we have a lot to learn from his death.”

I am grateful to all the doctors and nurses who did their best to care for him. He never left us alone. That is the only thing that saved him.”

On the day of Robert’s departure, Kathryn held his hand tightly and gently cuddled him as he passed away.
