British Actor Julian Sands Confirmed Dead; Body Found in California, U.S., Is Himself

On June 27, Julian Sands, a British actor who appeared in numerous films including “A Room with a View” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” was confirmed dead.

He was 65 years old. His body, which was found in the San Gabriel Mountains in California on the morning of June 24, was officially confirmed as his own.

Mr. Sands went missing while hiking in January of this year, and the search had been ongoing.

 

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced on June 27, “The identification of the body found on Baldy Mountain on June 24 has been completed and confirmed as that of Julian Sands, 65, of North Hollywood. The cause of death is still under investigation pending the results of further tests,” the office announced. The Sheriff’s Department thanked all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly to find Mr. Sands.

 

The Sheriff’s Office announced in a statement on June 24 that “on Saturday, June 24, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a private hiker contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Office to report the discovery of a body in the Baldy Mountain Wilderness Area.

 

Mr. Sands had appeared in the movie “A Room with a View,” which won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as in the films “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “24,” and “Young Superman,” a TV drama.

 

Mr. Sands was reported missing on January 13 near the Baldy Bowl in the San Gabriel Mountains during inclement weather.

 

Sands’ family released a statement in mid-month expressing their gratitude to “the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.

 

The family said, “We continue to hold glorious memories of Julian, a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and an original and collaborative expressionist.”

 

His brother, Nick Sands, commented in January of this year, when his brother’s whereabouts were unknown, that he had already said his goodbyes and that he accepted that he was gone and was dealing with it that way for him.

 

Mr. Sands had a passion for hiking. His friend and hiking partner, Kevin Ryan, once said that he did not know anyone as advanced a hiker as he was.

 

Born in Otley, Yorkshire in northern England and educated at Lord Wandsworth College in southern Hampshire, Sands played the role of an English photographer in the 1984 film “The Killing Fields,” which won several Academy Awards. Her performance caught the eye of director James Ivory and led to her appearance in the 1985 film “A Room with a View.

 

In “A Room with a View,” based on E.M. Forster’s novel set in England and Italy in the early 20th century, Ms. Sands played the role of Helena Bonham-Carter’s love interest. The film also starred several other famous British theater actors, including Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Judi Dench. It also led to Daniel Day-Lewis’ breakthrough role. In addition to its box office success, the film won several Academy Awards, British Academy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards. The British Film Institute (BFI) later listed it as one of the 100 best British films.

 

Mr. Sands appeared in Ken Russell’s psychological thriller “Gothic” before moving to Hollywood, where she starred in the 1989 horror film “Warlock,” the 1990 panic film “Arachnophobia,” and the 1993 mystery “Boxing Helena, He appeared in a number of films, including the 1995 film “Leaving Las Vegas” starring Nicolas Cage.

 

On television, he played a Russian terrorist in the 2006 thriller “24” starring Mr. Kiefer Sutherland, and in 2009 he played Superman’s real-life father in “Young Superman.

 

He met and married writer Evgenia Citkowitz through a friend, actor John Malkovich. They lived in North Hollywood with their two children.

 

He and his ex-wife Sarah Sands, a former BBC Radio program editor, also have a son.
