To commemorate Tom Cruise’s birthday on July 3, a breathtaking special behind-the-scenes footage of the making of “Speed Flying,” in which Tom Cruise flies at high speed at low altitude using his extreme sense of balance to control his parachute, has been released. In addition, it has been decided that “Mission: Impossible: Fallout” will be screened in IMAX 2D subtitled version for one day only on July 13 (Thursday) to commemorate “Ethan Hunt Day,” which has been officially designated as a day of commemoration.
The images are beautiful, but the actual filming is terrifying.”
The recently released footage from “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One” is so dangerous that it makes you forget to breathe and almost faint just watching it. This is a making-of scene of Tom Cruise’s “speedflying” filming, in which he maneuvers his parachute at unbelievably high speeds and plummets down steep cliffs with an extreme sense of balance.
Speedflying is an extremely thrilling sky sport in which a small, high-speed speedglider or skydiving parachute is used to take off on its own feet, like a paraglider, and glide at high speed through the air at low altitudes as if skimming the surface of a mountain.
Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked with Tom since “Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation” (2015) and with whom he has built a strong relationship of trust both publicly and privately, says with an air of mastery, “Tom knows no limits. While Tom gleefully describes speedflying as “a beautiful and delicate sport,” McCurry and speedflying coordinator John DeBoer say, “It’s also very dangerous. It’s not unlike skydiving. Skydiving is predictable, speedflying is not. You plummet down a mountain with a small parachute. You are so close to the ground that even the slightest crosswind can be dangerous,” he explains with contrasting calm.
Despite the exhilarating and beautiful spectacle, the risks are naturally the greatest. We land at high speeds. A momentary lapse in judgment during flight could result in serious injury. Speaking of Tom, Front Row reported the other day that he had given Pom Klementieff, his co-star in “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One,” advice to “be competent (*train hard and have the ability to perform dangerous scenes without risk). But the video reveals that Tom himself has been training for several years in order to perform dangerous scenes such as speed-flying.
The action isn’t just about doing it. The challenge is how to film Tom at high speed. We couldn’t get close enough with a helicopter or a drone, so we developed a special device that we put on Tom. We put a camera on his waist and operate it from a helicopter. It’s a beautiful image, but the actual filming is terrifying,” said McCurry, who is intent on capturing this intensity and power on the screen. The actual action depends on the weather. The flight footage, which you can feel the realism just by watching it, is a precious image that even shows the reason why Tom Cruise continues to be a star.
