The union of about 160,000 actors and actresses in the U.S. announced early July 13 that negotiations with production companies over improved compensation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) had ended in failure.

The strike will begin at midnight.

SAG-AFTRA had earlier revealed that negotiations with the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers of America (AMPTP), which represents management from Netflix to Sony Group to Walt Disney, had broken down.

Meanwhile, the strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which represents some 11,500 screenwriters, has been ongoing since May 2. Many shows and projects have already been suspended, and the start of the new school year in September is in jeopardy.

In Hollywood, there have already been delays in the production of visual productions. Actors are also on strike, and if the situation is prolonged, the impact on the local economy and entertainment industry could be severe. It is also likely to affect the actors’ PR activities during their visit to Japan.

At the UK premiere of “Oppenheimer,” director Christopher Nolan told the audience from the stage that actors Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and other cast members had cancelled their appearances on stage.
