The unscripted slapping incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock

At the 94th Academy Awards ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27 (local time), actor Will Smith got angry at presenter Chris Rock for making fun of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head and slapped Chris as hard as he could.

Jada has long confessed to suffering from alopecia, which is why she shaved her head. Will was furious that Chris made a joke about Jada’s sensitive hair, and even after he slapped Chris and returned to his seat, he said, “Don’t say my wife’s name! (Keep my wife’s name out of your f**cking mouth,” she cursed him, using the F-word.

Of course, the F-word is a banned word and is not allowed on the public airwaves. The fact that the TV broadcast in the U.S. was silent for a while after Will slapped Chris shows that the slap was not scripted and staged in advance, but was a spontaneous incident that resulted from Will’s real anger.

The panicked backstage when the slapping commotion occurred is evident.

At the time, the audience seemed surprised by Will’s actions, with groans and other reactions in the hall, but it seems that the same was true backstage as well. The Hollywood Reporter reported the testimony of a staff member who was backstage at the time.

A staff member told The Hollywood Reporter that at the time Will slapped Chris, the backstage green room (a waiting room where performers and others wait together) was occupied by Venus & Chris, the model for Will’s movie “Dream Plan”. Sisters Serena Williams were there, as well as actors Jake Gyllenhaal, Zoe Kravitz, Kevin Costner, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, and John Travolta, all of whom were about to appear as presenters, and Will’s longtime Publicist (publicist) Meredith O’Sullivan Wasson was also there.

Each was watching the awards ceremony on a monitor in the green room, but when they found out that Will had slapped Chris, the green room “got pretty quiet,” the source said. “Everyone was like, ‘What the hell is going on? Did it really happen? Oh my god!” Another source testified to the atmosphere at the time.

Basically, the presenters were supposed to return to the green room after handing out the trophies to the winners, but Chris Rock was able to present the Best Documentary Feature trophy to Questlove, the director of the film “Summer of Soul (or, When the Revolution Wasn’t Televised)”, and the winner of the Best Documentary Feature trophy was given to the director of the film, “The Soul of the Soul”, who was also present. He did not return to the green room after handing it over.

He also said that when the ceremony went into a commercial break, Dawn Hudson, CEO of the Academy (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), and David Rubin, president, entered the green room with their publicist and a serious look on their faces, and moved to another room with Wasson, Will’s publicist. The CEO and Chairman, who were originally seated in the audience, did not return to their seats after that, and Mr. Wasson reportedly went back and forth between Will’s seat and backstage where the CEO and others were.

While Will’s disturbance caused quite a commotion backstage, Bradley Cooper, Tyler Perry, Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington rushed to him during a commercial break at the awards ceremony. In his acceptance speech for the Best Actor Award, Will was told by Denzel, “Be careful when you’re at the top of your game. That’s when the devil comes.

The day after the award ceremony, Will issued a statement on social networking sites and formally apologized to Chris Rock. He said, “Jokes at my expense are part of my job, but the jokes about Jada’s physical illness were intolerable to me and I reacted emotionally. I would like to formally apologize to Chris. My words and actions were out of line and wrong,” he said in a statement of remorse.
