Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the progress of the two new “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies planned by Disney in the U.S. in The Sunday Times.
As for the return of Johnny Depp (as Jack Sparrow), “Not at this point. The future is not set in stone yet.”
The series has not released a new film since the fifth film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Last Pirates,” in 2017. Currently underway is a project starring Margot Robbie (“The Suicide Squad: “Extreme” Villains, Converged”) and another new film that has not even been outlined.
In an interview related to the movie “Top Gun Maverick,” which he produced, Bruckheimer said of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” situation, “I’m talking to Margot. We’re working on two new scripts. One will star her and the other will not,” he confessed. As for the return of Johnny Depp (Jack Sparrow), who has led the series so far, “Not at this point. The future is not set in stone yet,” he said.
Depp himself mentioned the series in his defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, when Amber’s lawyer asked, “If Disney offered you $300 million and 100 alpacas, would you still work with them on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’?” When asked, he replied, “That is correct. He indicated that he would not reprise his role as Jack Sparrow.
