According to Insider, Reyes, a teacher at Robb Elementary School who was injured in the incident, has not spoken to his cousin, Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo, since the shooting.

At the time of the incident, Reyes was first shot in the arm. He then pretended to be dead for about an hour until the shooter shot him again in the back. Reyes has now told NPR that the doorknob in his classroom has been broken for at least two years. He also stated that he did not understand why Mr. Arredondo, his cousin, said he was looking for the key when the door to the classroom where Ms. Reyes was located was unlocked. “I wished he had said, ‘I’m going in there because that’s where my family is.’ But he didn’t,” he recalled.

Arredondo has come under intense public scrutiny from the community and the families of the victims for the police’s slow response to the shootings. Earlier this month, he resigned from his position on the city council and is currently on administrative leave.

Reyes also commented that he does not know if he will return to teaching at the elementary school where he worked for seven years. He said he is still struggling with the loss of his students, but that support from the community is helping him cope. He said, “I am here. I am here because of the love from the community, the love from my family, and the desire to accomplish something for my students,” Reyes said.
